Oral Health During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, a woman’s increased hormones can affect how her body responds to plaque and bacteria in the mouth. This can result in an increased rise of periodontal disease and tooth decay. Other side effects of pregnancy, such as vomiting, gagging and cravings for sugary food can also increase these risks.
If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, a healthy mouth should be an important part of your healthy pregnancy.
We recommend you:
- Continue (or start) routine dental cleanings and exams
- Brush at least twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste
- Floss daily
- Avoid frequent sugary snacks
- Contact your dentist immediately if any concerns develop
